People Who Loves to Eat are Always the Best People

“You'll never know everything about anything, especially something you love.” Juila Child

Just a quick food for thought before I head for a quick holiday tomorrow. Kuala Lumpur, if you are interested, and which I will probably do a short travel journal after. So looking forward to the wanton mee and grass jelly at Petaling Street, the famous roadside bak kut teh, satay and not to even mention, the seafood!

I love eating. I love baking and cooking.
I love the scent of freshly chopped garlic, fried bacon and cookies from the oven.

I love travelling.
I love exploring the world, meeting people of different colours and cultures.

I love to blog, even about the most nonsensical things.

~
As Julia Child puts it,

“Find something you're passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it.”
~

Maybe that is why TheNomsaurus came from, a platform where I feel passionate in, a place maybe I can feed my addiction of sharing on. Even if not as single soul bothers to read it (which I absolutely hope not), I will still continue to fuel this humble foodblog with places to eat, recipes to cook, areas to look-about and what's not.

It has been a month since I started and the view hit 1500 a few days ago. Maybe it's a lot, maybe it's not. But I definitely want to take this opportunity to thank my readers, friends and families or maybe I don't even know who you are. I do hope that you're one of "the best people!"

Till then, do stay tuned to more gastronomic updates!

Recipe: Banana Bread

Chef John's Banana Bread is one of the best recipe I've came across. Not only it is delicious and easy to make, this loaf full of goodness also packs a healthy potassium punch. A healthier alternative for usual junk-snacking. Great for both adults and kids!

This scrumptious Banana Bread is my adaptation of John's fabulous recipe.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

Makes 1 regular-sized loaf

Ingredients

cooking spray
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup mashed ripe bananas
1/2 cup softened butter
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbp milk
1 cup chopped walnuts
1/3 cup sultanas
1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Steps

1. Preheat oven to 165C/325F.

2. Grease a 9X4 inch loaf pan.

3. In a bowl, whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.

4. In another large bowl, beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer until smooth.

5. Stir in mashed bananas.

6. Add eggs to the butter mixture one at a time, fully blending in each egg before adding the next.

7. Stir in vanilla extract and milk.

8. Stir in chopped walnuts, sultanas, chocolate chips and flour mixture until just incorporated. Do not overmix.

9. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Tap pan on the counter to release any air pockets.

10. Bake in preheated oven for 70-80 minutes or until skewer comes out clean.

11. Let the bread rest in the pan for 15-20 minutes before removing. Slice and serve.

Tips

1. For easy and mess-free mashed bananas, place 3 ripe bananas (depending on size) into a plastic food bag and mash them up.

2. For plumper and juicier sultanas, soak them in warm water for 1 minute, pat dry before using.

3. Another method to grease the loaf pan is to apply butter on the pan and smear it thinly and uniformly using a clean kitchen paper.

4. For slightly spiced version, simply add 1/2 tsp cinammon and 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg in Step 3.

Queen & Mangosteen @ Vivocity, Singapore

This British-influenced pub surely has an unique name - queen and mangosteen, you might ponder what is the link between those two. There is a rumour that the mangosteen was reputedly Queen Victoria's favourite fruit, and apparently she allegedly offered a reward to anyone who can bring this purple fruit to her. Hence, the clever name, but do not be mistaken for they do not sell any mangosteens (or queens) here.

Located within Vivocity with a spectacular paronomic view of the scenic waterfront and Sentosa, Queen & Mangosteen has one of the best ambience among the lesser atas restaurants. Upon entering, you'll be greeted by huge chalkboards with today's specials and promotions, plush couches, high tables and bench seatings which creates the contemporary British pub setting. It is half air-conditioned and half al-fresco, completed with an ornate island bar that overlooks the beautiful waterfront.

Without futhur ado, we ordered their signature Fresh Mesclun Salad (S$12.00), paired with roasted Roma tomatoes, pear and walnuts, Stilton Blue Cheese and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. I thought that this refreshing appetizer was texture-rich, the sweet crunch of pear and walnuts, the bright crisp of the greens, the sour chewiness from the tomato and cheese, and not to mention that the elements complemented each other as a whole.

Next up, I had Sirloin Steak (S$32.00) completed with thick cut chips, Yorkshire pudding, garden vegetables and served with mushroom pepper sauce. Like always, I had my steak's doneness at medium. It was firm and chewy, but I was disappointed as the meat was drier than expected. (I had to eat with lots of mushroom sauce.) The pudding was slightly crispy with a tad of grease on the exterior and soft inside, it tasted so good.

Peiyi had one of their most acclaimed pub grub, Fish & Chips (S$16.00) served with homemade curry tartare sauce. The fish fillets used were fresh and coated in a light crispy batter, however their tartare sauce was of mediocre standard only. The potato chips were thicker than the usual and has a nice crunch to it.

Queen & Mangosteen also serve quite an extensive menu of alcoholic beverages here, one might want to order some pub grubs to go along with your drink. Perfect for drink buddies.

Overall, the food standard is above average, thumbs-down for value wise, but it definitely scores big on it's picturesque ambience.

Genki Sushi @ Orchard Central, Singapore

Talking about technology, Genki Sushi has one of the most innovative ordering methods. Each table is equipped with one iPad preloaded with their very own application, which you order your food directly from the device. Your dishes will be delivered promptly right to you in a mini shinkansen (bullet train) on it's "railway track". After unloading your food, one then pressed a button to send the carrier back to the kitchen. How cool is that, I have to admit that I was pretty amused and mesmerized by the cute trains.
Don't know how to use their "GenkiPad"? Do not hesitate to approach one of their staff.
One of the must orders are the Salmon Triple Flavor (S$3.80) and Shrimp Triple Flavor (S$3.80), which consists of the key ingredients done in different ways. My favourite among the three is the ones which are seared briefly and topped with black pepper, which adds an additional kick to the sushi. There is also a similar version for the crab as well (S$3.80).

Seared Salmon with Pollack Roe (S$2.30) is nicely seared with a faint burnt fragrance, but Peiyi was complaining about  the lack of roes (or it's either the roes got melted when it was seared.) The salmon meat is soft and melts slightly in your mouth.

Their Steamed Egg Custard (S$2.30) is soft and silky, and packed with a reasonable amount of fish cakes, mushrooms and crab sticks. The downside is that the steamed egg lacks in flavour, it doesn't have the distinct eggy flavour.

Japanese Chilli Pepper to the rescue!

Feeling a need to eat something more, we ordered the Oyaku Don (S$5.80) - deep fried chicken chunks with a nice layer of fat in thin batter, paired with strips of sweet onion and runny omelette, and served along with a good bowl of Koshihikari rice, planted by the Japanese in Vietnam. I could really do with more eggs though.

One of my favourite is their free-flow of Japanese Green Tea (S$1.50), which you do-it-yourself, by mixing the green tea powder with hot water. Needless to say, you can adjust how strong is your cup of tea according to your preference.

Genki Sushi adds on to my list of favourites, and I'll definitely be back for more economical, yet authentic and quality Japanese food.

Just a conclusion tip - be there early or skip the peak hours. We were there at about 8.45pm on a Saturday, and we had to wait for approximately 20 - 30 minutes.

928 Laksa @ Yishun Central, Singapore

Laksa is one of the must tries in Singapore cuisine, but finding a good bowl of that spicy goodness is another story altogether. However residents in the north would point out a small corner shop hidden amidst Yishun Central, 928 Laksa - where queues are never-ending even at passed-lunch-time hours. Their speciality, and only item they sell is so well-known, that people from all across the island flocked just to satisfy their laksa cravings.

Now, you might think why it is called 928 Laksa, the answer is simple - it is located at BLK 928. In business for 15 years and counting, this humble shop has become a household name in the north, but has yet to expand much. Hence, be prepared to wait, as seatings are quite limited there.

Their signature laksa (S$2.50) is full of ingredients, thick beehoon paired with slices of fish cake, taupok, half hard boiled egg and cockles, garnished with laksa leaves. The most important item - gravy is just perfect with the right amount of coconut milk and chilli paste. It also brings along the rich fragrance of dried shrimps.

The homemade laksa chilli is superb, one of the best laksa chilli I have ever had. The spiciness is mild, but the fragrance of the sambal is so good. For diners who can't handle spicy food, do not fret as they sell drinks and desserts at a reasonable price, to "put off the flame".
Overall, it was a good bowl of laksa, I savoured it till the last drop of gravy. And I'd say it is on par with the famous local Katong Laksa. Not enough? Upsize your bowl of laksa for just an additional S$0.50.

Recipe: Chocolate Chip Banana Muffin

The weekends are coming, and what is better than spending your lazy Saturday afternoon baking?  (Well, other than lazing on your bed.) A while back, I found this banana-licious recipe and decided to try it out. It is fairly easy to make, and the result is absolutely yummy. Delicious treats and definitely great for parties.

Still have bananas lying around in your kitchen? What are you waiting for?

Difficulty: Easy

Makes 16 regular-sized muffins

Ingredients

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 egg
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 plain yogurt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup mashed ripe bananas
3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Steps

1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

2. In another bowl, combine egg, oil, yogurt and vanilla extract.

3. Stir into dry ingredients just until moistened.

4. Fold in mashed bananas and chocolate chips.

5. Fill greased or paper-lined muffins cups two-thirds full.

6. Bake at 180C/350F for 22-25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

7. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.

Tips

1. For easy and mess-free mashed bananas, place 3 ripe bananas (depending on size) into a plastic food bag and mash them up.

2. Try substituting plain yogurt with flavoured yogurt for additional flavours. You can also add in chopped nuts and raisins for the extra texture.

3. If you do not have yogurt at home, fret not. Substitute it with milk or sour-cream. The result would be a lighter and moister muffin.

The Handburger @ Raffles City, Singapore

One of the restaurants that left a huge impression on me is this casual fast-food chain. Not only because of the food, but The Handburger (Somerset 313) was where I brought my first date for a simple dinner.

Their mains include the burger, a garden salad (with or without bacon) or soup of the day. The salad was refreshing and crisp, but the bacon strips were too hard and chewy for my liking. The cream of chicken with crispy crumbs (soup for that day) definitely makes a better choice.

Anyway, I ordered one of their classics, Handburger Original (S$13.80) - 150g of 100% NZ grass-fed prime beef on a bed of crispy lettuce, cheddar cheese, topped up with homemade BBQ sauce and sweet onion jam. The beef patty was exploding with juices, and I want to rave about their toasted caramelised onion bun. It is that good. Crispier than the usual boring buns, it also brings along the frangrance of onions.

One of my friends ordered the Blue Cheese Beef Burger (S$17.80) - the same juicy patty, topped with roasted pear, blue cheese, homemade BBQ sauce and sweet onion jam. I would recommend the Handburger Original over this though.

We also had their signature creation, The Works (S$17.80) - same patty, topped with battered onion rings, crispy bacon strips, sunny side-up, sauteed basil pesto mushroom, sweet onion jam, melted cheddar cheese, homemade BBQ and aioli sauce. A little of everything, this ingenious burger is the perfect choice if you are still deciding what to eat after an hour.

To complete your meal, add in their Nutella Milkshake with Marshmellow (S$4.50), a chocolatey, thick drink with soft marshmellows to go with. Just to add on, they have a loyalty program (THB Fanatics) designed to reward their diners with points, which can be redeemed to offset future bills, and other special promotions too.

Definitely one of the dining places I will frequent occasionally, for old times sake and the affordable, yet quality burgers as well.

Barcelos Flame Grilled Chicken @ Vivocity, Singapore

Barcelos Flame Grilled Chicken was another dining place where we passed-by so many times without trying. Donned with the huge rooster signage, one can hardly missed it. So on last Saturday, while Bromance buddies (Brother Tim and ZR) and I were hesitating between Xi Men Ding and this fast-food chain, we decided to go for some chickens (no pun intended) instead.

Boasting their signature marinade recipe and the finest quality chicken, they are marinated the traditional Portugese way for 24 hours, 100% flamed grilled and seasoned to perfection. To see whether they proved their point, we ordered their chicken, all marinated with their Supa Peri sauce.

Note: It comes with four different level of spiciness, in the following order: Tangy Lemon, Mild Peri, Veri Peri, Supa Peri.

I can't make up my mind on what to eat, so I went for their Twin Mixed Skewers (S$14.95) - one skewer of chicken and another of beef, which also comes with salad and one regular side dish. The beef was well-seasoned and juicy, but the chicken counterpart was over-cooked. I love the garden salad - fresh and crisp. I tried adding their peri peri sauce on it, and it tasted uniquely amazing.

Brother Tim and ZR had their 1/4 Chicken Meal (S$14.95), which comes together with either two sides or one side with a drink. Unlike my chicken skewer, their meat was very well-marinated, juicy and tender. Both chickens were nicely charred, which adds to its' distinctive smoky taste.

The potato sides (especially their wedges and fries) are lightly salted and crisp, dipped in their Supa Peri sauce - one of the nicest I had.

This is definitely not the last visit, but to be honest, I prefer Nandos though.

126 Eating House (揾到食) @ Geylang, Singapore‏

Conveniently located at 126 Sims Avenue, this old-style Cantonese restaurant is just a few minutes walk away from Kallang MRT. One of my favourite makan places in Geylang, with more than 70 quality yet affordable dim-sum dishes to choose from, 126 Eating House is a must-try for all dim-sum lovers.

You must try their signature King Siew Mai (S$4.20), four steaming hot mega-dumplings, exploding with succulent prawn, pork and mushrooms. They also comes in smaller bites. Food orgasm, period.

Prawn Dumplings (S$3.20), better known as Har Gau is also a must-try when it comes to dim-sum.  A good Har Gau's wrapping must be thin and translucent, yet be sturdy enough not to break when picked up nor stick to the paper. Wrapped together with the right amount of fillings, this dish clearly demonstrates the chef's skills. Pretty impressive.

Pork Ribs (S$2.50), another one of their classics tasted so good. The meat is well-marinated and tender.

The only dish that gave me a slight disappointment was the Fried Seafood Rolls (S$4.00). It is excessively oily and I have expected the skin to be crispier. The filling was okay though.

Every visit, my father will surely order the Chicken Feet (S$2.50). The sauce which comes with the item achieved a perfect balance of thickness and sweetness and complemented the chicken feet well.

We had their Char Siew Cheong Fun (S$3.50), roasted pork wrapped in rice noodle roll, which came in both steam and fried styles. However, the sauce on the steamed version was a little too salty for my taste.

We ordered some assorted porridge to go with those savoury treats. Their signature Claypot Frog Porridge (S$5.00) is my favourite among the three. The generous amount of frog meat is soft and tender, yet preserving it's springy texture. We also ordered their (from left) Pork Intestine Porridge (S$4.00) and Century Egg Porridge (S$3.00).

Try out their Honey Lemon (S$2.50) with jelly bits too. One drinks it out from a big "take-away" container instead of the usual cups, definitely one of the must tries as well.

Opened 24 hours daily, 126 Eating House is a place not to be missed for your dim-sum fixes.

Seventh Heaven @ Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

A piece of heaven between our visit to the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. The people were complaining how thirsty and hungry we are, hence we decided to have ice cream to quench our thirst.

Famed for their "adult ice-cream" (with alcohol) and more than 30 handcrafted signatures to choose from, including Lychee Martini and Sea Salt Caramel, one would be spoilt for choice. They also features floral flavours exclusive to this outlet only.

Skipping all their alcholic and floral flavours, we go for their signatures instead - Butterscotch & Pecan and Rocky Road. Smooth and creamy. Their best seller, Butterscotch & Pecan did not appeal to me much, but the latter is good.

We also had the Hazelnut & Brownie and Sea Salt Caramel. The salty counterpart tasted pretty unique, it is like eating popcorn in ice-cream form, whereas the Hazelnut & Brownie is rich and chocolatey, but it can definitely do with more brownie chunks.

Generous scoops of ice-cream!

Seventh Heaven is definitely a pit-stop if you want to re-charge yourself between the different attractions in Gardens by the Bay. But still, Baskin Robbins and Udders remained as my personal favourite.

Shin Kushiya @ Vivocity, Singapore

A dear aunt of mine introduced me to Shin Kushiya when it opened not long ago, I have frequented this Japanese restaurant quite a bit since then and till now, it has remained as one of my definite favourites.

Shin Kushiya is well-known for their authentic Kushiyaki, or skewers grilled with Bincho charcoal (aka King of White Charcoal) imported from Japan. One can truly taste the quality of the fresh ingredients used and the distinct smoky flavour. Paired with their homemade tare sauce, Kushiyaki is definitely a must-try. Perfect for quite bites before main course and sharing. Prices ranged from S$2.00 onwards per skewer.

Platters of mouth-watering Kushiyaki
Still craving for more small bites before your main? Why not try out their softshell crab temaki (S$3.40) or a plate of crispy, tasty whole crab for sharing?

We ordered the Sanshoku Don (S$17.80), a delicious combination of fresh salmon, maguro and kaki on top of a bed of soft Japanese rice. Ever heard of sashimi melting in your mouth? This is it. Sanshoku (三色) actually means toppings with three different colours. They are not only limited to sashimi, but also to other ingredients (i.e. dango, eggs, vegetables) as well.

Their Pork Cutlet (S$16.80) is crispy on the outside and tender inside. Dipped in their spicy tare sauce and paired with the crunchy fresh salad, I bet you'll be begging for seconds.

Good and authentic Japanese food, without burning your wallet. Shin Kushiya is the place to head to.

Eighteen Chefs @ Tiong Bahru Plaza, Singapore

It was some times back when Peiyi and yours truly decided to get some light bites after a movie. After mulling for a few minutes, we decided to settle for Eighteen Chefs, a brainchild of former drug addict and convict, Chef Benny who believes in providing a positive working environment and experience for troubled youths and ex-convicts. Hence, do not be alarmed when a young man, full of tatoos is serving you. What a noble cause!

With students and youths as their targeted patrons (discounts or specials when you display your student pass etc), I wasn't convince about the food quality. Perhaps of previous bad experiences, I do not trust them as much. Eighteen Chefs surprised me. I wouldn't say that it was exceptionally good, but it was considerably above average, given that most of their dishes are value for money.

Down to the food, we ordered the Bolognaise Cheese Fries (S$4.90) - mozzarella cheese-baked fries topped with classic beef bolognaise sauce. The fries portion was generous and I assure you that they neither scrimp on their sauce.

With the flavour incorporated to every single potato fry, this afternoon snack makes the cut to be one of their signature dishes. Do note however, that the cheese fries are really filling, so it is recommended to share this among 2-3 people, if you are eating it along with their mains.

Look at that cheesy goodness!

The Waffle w/ Vanilla ice cream (S$6.50) topped up with chocolate fudge was okay. While the Belgian waffles is a little too cold for my liking, the generous drizzle of chocolate fudge is a plus point.

Eighteen Chefs also provides customized pastas or cheese baked dishes, where you D-I-Y your meals by choosing from a wide selection of sauces and ingredients, and they cook it for you.

White Dog Cafe @ Vivocity, Singapore

Last Friday, Peiyi and yours truly headed to Vivocity with not a single idea what to eat. Although I frequent this mall oftenly, I wanted to try something I never had. It is when we stumbled upon Barcelos Chicken and White Dogs Cafe, I had quite a hard time deciding, before we settled for the latter. After approximately 15 minutes of waiting, we were ushered to a table near the entrance, not what I hoped I'd get because I would really like a table with a Sentosa view.

I ordered their Seafood Marinara (S$14.00) - the linguine pasta is cooked al-dente, but the sauce can do with a little more salt. Their portion of seafood is larger than usual, with a generous serving of succulent prawns, mussels and squid rings. However, I thought that the overall appearance can be improved. (Currently, it looks like the chef dumped the whole chunk of seafood-mixed pasta on the plate.)

Peiyi had their special set menu, which includes Grilled Half Chicken, Soup of the day (which you can upgrade to premium for S$1) and a glass of drink. The upgraded appetizer tasted lumpy, which is already a huge down point. But at least the garlic bread tastes crispy and fragrant.

For the Grilled Half Chicken, we substituted the french fries with a really bowl of mashed potatos. It also comes with coleslaw salad and their signature peri-peri sauce. The chicken is soft and tender, with the flavour of the seasoning fully absorbed. I highly recommend eating together with the spicy sauce.

White Dog Cafe is one of the restaurants that I will visit again, but not in the near future. The next time I visit, I'll definitely book earlier to get a table with the panoramic scenery and of course, to save myself the waiting time.

Gardens by the Bay @ Singapore

Amongst the tall architectures and skyscrapers in Singapore's central business district, gigantic futuristic-looking supertrees and two huge glass houses sprung up from the 101 hectares Gardens by the Bay. Last Saturday afternoon, we finally have the chance to check out this newly-built attraction.

Contrary to original greenhouses, the two iconic-shell shape conservatories are fully air-conditioned, offering an escape from the tropical heat in Singapore. The Flower Dome replicates cool dry conditions, featuring rare and exotic plants found in the Mediterranean and semi-arid tropical regions, whereas the Cloud Forest which replicates tropical mountain regions between 1,000m and 3,000m above sea levels. It also features the "Cloud Mountain" and a stunning 35m waterfall.
Below are some pictures taken during the visit (please do click to enlarge the images):

Some of my favourites in the Flower Dome (above)

The 1.2 hectares Flower Dome is divided into several different regions, featuring some of the most threatened species in the world. In addition to the permanent flower displays, there will be a seasonal change of floral displays as well. While having a flowery feast with your eyes, why not go closer and take in a breath of nature's scent, rejuvenating not only your body, but your mind and soul too.

Peiyi and my bestie's girlfriend, Pamela imitating the statue

The night falls before we know it, after having a dessert break at Seventh Heaven, we continued our journey at the Cloud Forest. Upon entering and not far from the entrance, we already felt gushes of chilly wind coming from the waterfall.

Some of my favourites in the Cloud Forest (above)

Be sure not to miss out the different exhibitions at the "Cloud Mountain". Most of them are pretty educational, so it is good for children too.

How majestic the supertrees looked at night

Gardens by the Bay is a few minutes walk from Bayfront station. Additionally, the link-bridge from Marina Bay Sands(MBS) provides greater accessibility and convinience for the visitors. Although one cannot fully describe his experience in one blog post, I guarantee that Gardens by the Bay is definitely a not-to-be-missed attraction in Singapore.
