It just took a single gastronomical trip down to Canton-i for me to get hooked up and begging for seconds. The reason is none other than a table filled up with tantalizing wanton noodles, century egg porridge and a few baskets of steamed buns and dim sum. That is why on a recent getaway to Johor Bahru, we decided to bring along a few friends for some good and affordable dim sum. I mean, who doesn't adore cheap and awesome dim-sum?
Their JB's City Square branch is nestled on the third floor, decorated with modern-chic furniture and bustling with hungry goers, even when it was past lunch time. Surprisingly, the outlets in Singapore did not do as well, as we see the recent closure of the Orchard Ion's branch. Not to mention, one had to fork out extra in Singapore, in comparison with Malaysia. Nevertheless, quality is still dominant in the latter.
It is hard to go wrong with cheong fun, porridge and their signature noodles paired up with big, succulent shrimp wanton. Other assorted dim sum dishes, such as egg tarts and custard buns are must-tries as well. Their egg tarts was simply brilliant, completed with flaky crust and smooth egg fillings. Now, if you're wondering why their custard buns are purple in colour, it is because they incorporated taro into it. Innovative, but flavour-wise it was too mild to notice any differences.
Service is nothing lesser than impeccable, as the servers attend efficiently to every customer despite the hectic crowds. The whole brunch left the hungry lot of 6 well-fed and satisfied, and costed about RM200, which calculates to less than S$13 each. Canton-i, is in short, a great place for dim-sum lovers, and definitely a must-go when one is in Johor Bahru.
