Great news to all my fellow Westies, because there exists another neighbourhood gem at Jurong East. - actually it's located about a 10-minute walk from Chinese Garden MRT. Still near la hor? Since its opening in July 2015, I've been eyeing to strike this cafe off my to-try list, and I finally did so. We went to The Usual Place on a Saturday afternoon, and it was almost packed. Wah, heng sia (lucky) got seats. Their concept reminded me of another cafe in the West (Coffee: Nowhere) and the best thing? No service and GST charge! I believe they didn't sneakily add them into the prices though.
For the classic choice of trying-everything-on-one-plate, have a go at their Full English Breakfast (S$13.90), which consists of toasts, mini-hash browns, sliced mushrooms, sausage, scrambled eggs, bacon, and coupled with salad and salsa. Ang moh breakfast platter is like our rojak. Ingredients that complement each other like this rarely go wrong.
Okay, here's the real deal - their Usual Wings (S$6.50). Half a dozen of marinated wings deep fried to perfection. Within its crust, lies the tender and juicy chicken meat, paired with BBQ sauce, this dish is definitely a must-order. Since my partner was slightly sick, I had to finish five out of the six wings. No complaints. Finger-licking good. Quote "NOMSAURUS" and they will give you extra two more! Two more milliliters of BBQ sauce that is.
If you're looking for something heavier, I recommend the Usual Burger (S$13.90) - burger buns with homemade beef patty, sunny side-up, caramelised onions, cheddar, and bacon. As compared to Coffee: Nowhere's version, their patty was much juicier, but slightly oilier on the whole. It really depends on what preferences are. And of course, this is completed with french fries too.
Will I be back? Yeah, most probably to try out their signature Salted Egg Prawn Pasta, which was evidently on every single table back then. Until then, my search for more hidden gems in the neighbourhood awaits!
